CL was born in Seoul, South Korea, on February 26, 1991. Due to her father's occupation as a physics professor, she spent much of her childhood living in various cities, including Paris, Tsukuba (Japan), and Tokyo. At 13, she moved to Paris alone to study for two years. This international upbringing contributed to her fluency in Korean, English, and Japanese, and shaped her diverse cultural perspective.

At 15, CL auditioned for YG Entertainment. She reportedly waited for Yang Hyun-suk (YG's CEO) for a long time in cold weather to hand him her demo tape, leading to her recruitment as a trainee in late 2006.

CL was initially planned to debut as a solo artist, but she ultimately became the leader and main rapper of 2NE1. 

CL made her solo debut in South Korea with the single "The Baddest Female" on May 28, 2013. She collaborated with international artists such as Skrillex, Diplo, and The Black Eyed Peas.
