Sunny, born in California, had a unique childhood that involved moving to Kuwait briefly before settling in Korea. She is notably the niece of SM Entertainment founder Lee Sooman. Her path to debut was relatively fast; she initially trained in another company for a different group before joining SM in 2007, having the shortest trainee period among Girls' Generation members. Within the group, Sunny was recognized for her charming personality, often engaging in radio DJ activities. 

Following her decision to depart from SM Entertainment in 2023, she has remained active in musicals, variety shows, and radio.
