The youngest candidate, Taemin, faced severe vocal changes during puberty without formal vocal lessons, practicing relentlessly on his own to prove his readiness for a group setting. Together with Onew and Jonghyun, the trainees shared a single small dormitory room and developed their dynamic through daily friction, intensive practice, and early promotional activities. Their pre-debut image was further built on a distinct aesthetic that immediately influenced youth street fashion in South Korea, setting the foundation for their identity as trendsetters in performance and style.

Throughout their history, the group was deeply shaped by the artistic presence of main vocalist Jonghyun, whose distinct tone and prolific songwriting defined much of their core musical identity. The artist tragically took his life in December 2017, a profound loss that deeply impacted his bandmates, the agency, and music fans worldwide. Honoring his legacy, the remaining members chose to continue as a four-member lineup, maintaining their shared bond and continuing to fulfill their collective vision on stage while keeping his memory central to the group's ongoing story.
