Red Velvet (레드벨벳) is a South Korean Girl Group that debuted in 2014. They consist of 5 members: Irene, Joy, Seulgi, Wendy and Yeri.
They hold the 6th most Music Show Awards among all artists in Korea. They have 14 songs among the most popular in Korea.
Most of the members (except Joy) were involved in the SM Rookies project, where they were introduced to the public through performances, collaborations, and modeling gigs. Yeri, who was also part of SM Rookies, did not debut with the other members but where introduced shortly later.
Red Velvet's initial concept was to show their versatility by switching the group's image between "Red" and "Velvet." "Red" represents their bright, vibrant, and quirky side, typically featuring upbeat, pop-driven songs with colorful aesthetics and playful choreography. "Velvet" focused on their softer, more sophisticated, and mature side, characterized by R&B-influenced tracks, smoother vocals, and elegant, often darker, aesthetics.
With time, SM stopped focusing on this duality, although fans still tried to figure out which concept was the focus of each song.
