Growing up with a deep passion for vocal performance, Onew honed his singing skills at a specialized academy before being scouted during an academy showcase. His impressive vocal control caught the attention of agency executives, leading to an immediate contract offer. Entering the trainee system, he spent over two years refining his signature soft, warm tone while training alongside candidate peers. During his pre-debut days, he focused heavily on vocal discipline and harmony work, ultimately securing his place as the oldest member and leader of SHINee.
