한 Girls' Generation

Girls' Generation (소녀시대) was a South Korean Girl Group that debuted in 2007. They retired in 2017 with a 8 artist final line-up and held an Anniversary event in 2022.

They hold the 5th most Music Show Awards among all artists in Korea. They have 13 songs among the most popular in Korea.

Girls' Generation was one of the first big group to use the K-Pop Idol formula as we know today, with multi-year process involving extensive training, selection of girls at young age, and different scouting methods from avenues, open auditions and even street casting.

Prior to their official debut, several members gained experience and public exposure through various activities. For instance, Yoona was active in commercials and appeared in TVXQ's "Magic Castle" music video. Sooyoung had a brief pre-debut career in Japan as part of a duo named "Route 0". Jessica, trained for over seven years, while Hyoyeon was known for her exceptional dance skills even before debut. Taeyeon and Tiffany were recognized for their strong vocal abilities early on.

A significant global highlight was the release of "The Boys" in 2011, their first album primarily produced for international markets, with an English version of the title track. This marked a deliberate push into the Western music scene, leading to performances on major U.S. talk shows.

The group experienced a lineup change in 2014 with the departure of Jessica, when management considered that she was using too much time for her own personal activities and brands and neglecting the group.

The group entered an hiatus in 2017 when Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun left SM with the condition that the group would not officially disband. In 2023 Sunny also left SM.

Despite the group never officially disbanding, there was never any other release since 2017 other than the 15 year anniversary reunion (Forever 1).
